I enjoy modding cars and both budget and purchase accordingly. I stay away from the higher price cars as most products have an affluence tax added on for many reasons. However, a few products that I’m looking at for my Subaru would make most people blush and my wife furious. I have some wonderful custom wheels from forgestar that are incredibly light weight. But, I have started to look at some guys, custom made for 12k. They’re carbon, they weigh under 12 pounds for an 18x10.

I have a host of upgrades going in this year, but perhaps next. This is a silly purchase that cannot be rationalized, but if I did I probably wouldn’t regret it.

What is everybody else’s limit for an item mod based on car they’re modding?

I don’t really have a limit, but the more expensive an item is the longer I’ll wait before pulling the trigger. Most of the time I end up deciding not to do it (ch ampionship white 6ul’s, 10lbs each for the Miata. Hnnnggg ). But at the end of the day, as much as I love driving and competing, my love for customizing and building a car is every b it as high .

On my aspirational someday list are TE37's, custom fifteen52 wheels, quaife sequencial gearbox, LFX, jdm Mazdaspeed bucket seats, and these coilovers. All pricey, none of it rational, but I'd be happy using money for any of them

I get that, it is a very personal decision once we're beyond financial commitments.

Those wheel weights are insane. I wonder about durability concerns, but oh man...

What do the current wheels weigh?

My 18x9.5 were 18.5-18.7 lbs per wheel. Carbon is way more durable than aluminum for a lot of reasons if it is designed properly.

That’s kind of what I was getting at... Is t his a reputable company? That would be a pretty insane drop in rotational mass, I think you should go for it

I think you shouldn’t spend more than the cost of the car. Although a s long as parts are not permanent, you can usually sell them off on forums easily . I generally buy used parts and let other people take the initial hit for this reason, good way to meet fellow enthusiasts too.

Lightweight wheels make the biggest difference. I was running a set of 19s that were same as stock wieght. Switched to light 18s by Apex and its one of my favourite mods so far (maybe on par with the coilovers...)

A lot of the fun in cars is sharing with the community and learning new things. Mods are a big part of this. We can’t be at the racetracks or blasting down mountain roads ever y day.

I always ask, “what’s the point?” Functional things I can justify, but they have to make a tangible difference in what I’m trying to do. Getting stuck? Better tires and maybe a winch. Hit a plateau at the track? Which mod is really going to make a difference?

Spending money to make my car look faster without making a significant improvement in performance (and one which I’ll actually use in competition)  is just a waste of money in my book.

when you get to a certain point it’s about the law of diminishing returns for me. I’ll use my audio hobby for example. When I was really into it I learned a lot, but not from marketing. I’ve heard the difference in an excellent pair of $2000 bookshelf speakers compared to an excellent pair of $9000 bookshelf speakers. Unless you have a dedicated room with high attention paid to acoustics, you really won’t hear that difference. So if you don’t have the means to enjoy the slight edge in performance , is it worth the extra $7k?

H aven’t done much in terms of exploring extensive or expensive modifications to my cars. Mostly due to personal preference and how I budget. I think the most I’ve spent so far is $800 on tires for the Z06.

But another part of it is I have a friend that does indulge heavily so I live vicariously through him . He’ll tell me he spent over two grand on a shifter or the race clutch will cost four grand . Sometimes I think he’s crazy but at the end of the day, if you’re building your car for racing or just yourself, there’s no limit on what can be spent.

I generally take the stance of tasteful, functional, and reliable as a preference. Honestly none of my 4 wheel vehicles have been heavily mod’d to this point as a result, but my bikes have been .

$12k wheels on a Subaru? Nah. I’d be so paranoid  about  hitting a pothole and destroying one that it would ruin the driving experience.

Gonna take some time to save for that as I already have this year's budget committed, but that weight is nuts.
